The distinctive black and white checked fabric called Sapup Poleng is seen everywhere in Bali. Saput means fabric or cloth and Poleng means two coloured. You’ll see it wrapped around trees, and draped over statues and buildings. For the Balinese this fabric represents everything in terms of duality, good and evil, right and wrong, happiness and sorrow. For the Hindu religion this textile represents a constant balance between opposing forces or elements.
